JTG is currently seeking Spanish Analytical Linguists to support a federal law enforcement customer. The Analytical Linguists monitor, translate, transcribe, and interpret communications in English and Spanish.

Locations: In-person onsite work in normal office working conditions in offices nationwide: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, El Paso, Houston, Los Angeles, Louisville, Miami, New Orleans, Newark, New York, Omaha, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, San Juan, Seattle, St. Louis, Washington

Status: Independent Contractor

Timeline:

  • 30 days at a time, with potential extensions of 60 to 90 days or more.
  • Requires periods of non-traditional hours including consecutive nights or weekends when necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring: Listening to or reading foreign language communications, lawfully intercepted, and performing immediate verbal summaries, then subsequent written or typed summaries, into English.
  • Transcribing: Rendering the spoken word of a language into the written form of the same language, then saving the result on a computer storage device and/or in printed format.
  • Translating: Rendering the spoken or written word of one language into the written form of another language, then saving the results on a computer storage device or other storage media and/or in printed format. The translation will be predominantly spoken or written Spanish to spoken or written English. The register, style, and tone of the source language should be conserved.
  • Interpreting: Translating orally either consecutively or simultaneously from one language to another.
  • Validating: Reviewing another individual’s translation or transcription or providing quality control of a specified work to attest to the accuracy of the final work.
  • Summarizing: Providing a typed, concise, and accurate synopsis of oral or written communications intercept that contains the identity of the speakers or correspondents, and all locations and events mentioned that pertain to the subject of the communication.

Definitions:
Deconfliction Analysis: Checking for target numbers and/or devices or other contacted telephone numbers and/or devices in an investigative case on the system that’s having contact with target numbers and/or devices or other contacted telephone numbers and/or devices in a separate investigative case on the system.

Voice Library: A library consisting of voice exemplar references where persons have identified themselves or been identified during a phone conversation. The exemplar is used for future voice comparisons.

Source Data: The class of data requiring linguist services. Classes of data are verbal or written. Verbal Source Data typically is derived from audio or video recordings. Written Source Data is typically derived from official documents, transcripts, emails, maps, etc.

Minimization: Legal instruction given by the court or prosecutor to the Analytic Linguist which identifies the types of “privileged” communications that the Analytic Linguists may not listen to and/or capture electronically

Understands and complies with Court regulations concerning minimization procedures and may attend training on this subject.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Government Security Clearance.
  • Minimum of three years of translation experience; a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution in lieu of experience may be accepted.
  • Ability to pass credit and criminal background investigation.
  • Willingness to undergo random polygraph testing.
  • Computer literacy and ability to type a minimum of 40 WPM.
  • Excellent command of English and the ability to produce clear and concise oral and written work.
  • Ability to pass a language evaluation in both the source language and English at level 3 or higher on the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.
  • Understanding of slang and colloquial expressions in the source language, and ability to translate them into English.
  • Proficiency with a variety of storage media including audio cassettes, video cassettes, digital media).

Additional considerations: May require ability to lift/and or move objects or packages of up to 25 lbs.

This position reports to the Program Manager.
